Long Weekend in Wells, Maine Itinerary

Almost every Labor Day weekend, we visit Wells, Maine. You can read about our specific 2018 trip here. We’ve created this Wells, Maine itinerary from our years of visiting. Wells is a relaxing New England getaway and the third oldest town in Maine. It is close by to other towns like Freeport and Ogunquit that you can visit easily by car. Enjoy our Wells, Maine itinerary!

Day 1: Arrive and Evening in Wells

Arrive in Wells

After a few hours drive, we arrive in Wells for the weekend. Our first stop is always the local grocery store, Hannaford Supermarket. We stay at a rental with a kitchen so we try to eat some meals at the rental. Thus, we stock up on food at the beginning of the trip. Once our grocery haul is done, we arrive at the rental and unpack.

Dinner at Varano’s

A favorite restaurant of ours in Wells is Varano’s Italian Restaurant. It’s only a few minutes drive from our rental near Wells Beach. The pasta is delicious and great way to start off the vacation!

Day 2: Beach and Freeport, Maine

Breakfast

One delicious breakfast spot in Wells is Congdon’s Doughnuts. It offers a sit-down restaurant with full breakfast, including eggs and bacon. However, the showstopper is their donuts! You can order donuts at the restaurant, their take-out window, or even go through their drive-thru! This is a must on our Wells, Maine itinerary! Either stop in for breakfast or take some donuts home.

Relaxing and Beach

After breakfast, we like to relax at the rental for a little while. Alex goes fishing and I usually read. As the day warms up, we walk over to the beach. Wells has great waves for boogie boarding! After a few hours at the beach, we return to the house for lunch. Then we shower, change, and get ready for an afternoon excursion.

Freeport, Maine

From Wells, Freeport is roughly an hour drive. Freeport is home to the L.L. Bean Flagship store,. We always spend some time at L.L. Bean when in Freeport and we utilize their free parking lots behind the store. Labor Day Weekend is a busy time there and L.L. Bean offers a concert series on Saturdays in the summer, so check their website to see if there are any artists that you are interested in!

After L.L. Bean, we spend some time shopping at the various outlets, including Sperry, Calvin Klein, Gap, and Loft.

Day 3: Beach and Ogunquit

Breakfast

Another favorite breakfast restaurant is the Egg and I. This is a popular spot and there is usually a line. We recommend arriving early, although you might still have to wait. There are places to sit outside and they offer beverages while you wait. Breakfast here is delicious and they are best known for pancakes and eggs Benedict!

Tip: They do not accept credit cards, debit cards, or checks. Bring cash or use their on-site ATM.

Relaxing and Beach

Following breakfast, we head back to the rental. Like the day before, we relax and hang out at the beach for the morning.

Ogunquit, Maine

In the afternoon, we drive roughly 15 minutes to Perkins Cove in Ogunquit. There are several parking lots in Perkins Cove (like 103 Perkins Cove Road) and we park here for a while to spend time in the cove. We explore the shops, watch the drawbridge, and have a snack. A great spot for lobster rolls in Ogunquit is Foot Bridge Lobster. There is also the Perkins Cove Candy if you want something sweet.

After exploring the cove, we drive closer to Main Street in Ogunquit and park there. There are several parking lots where you pay by the hour. You may need to drive around to find one with open spots; one possibility is behind 254 Main St. We then spend some time shopping and walking around downtown Ogunquit.  One possibility for dinner is Roberto’s.

Day 4: Kennebunkport and Mini-Golf

Breakfast and Relaxing

We spend a quiet morning at the rental and eat breakfast there. Again, we spend time at the beach and relax.

Mini-Golf

Wonder Mountain Fun Park is a few minutes drive from Wells Beach and offers go-karts, a human maze, mini-golf, and an arcade. It’s popular with families, and we like to stop by for a round of mini-golf (if it isn’t too busy).

Kennebunkport, Maine

Another afternoon adventure is Kennebunkport, Maine. The town is roughly a 15 minute drive from Wells Beach. The two main streets, Spring Street and Maine Street, have parking but you may need to drive a while to find a spot. We like to shop and browse bookstores.

On our recent 2019 trip, we discovered an amazing food truck, Maxim’s Desserts. Their specialty is a “pie cone,” which is an ice cream cone with pie inside and on top of it! So yummy! We ordered a blueberry pie cone with vanilla ice cream. The company was also started by a Kennebunkport resident, Maxim LeBlanc, while he was still in high school! We highly recommend looking up the Maxim’s food truck if you are there in the summer! A highlight of our Wells, Maine itinerary!
